The Environmental Protection Agency has named USAA Real Estate Company as an ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year for its leadership in energy management by reducing greenhouse gas emissions. USAA Real Estate Company’s accomplishments were recognized at an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. in April.

USAA Real Estate Company, a partner in the program since 2000, earned the Partner of the Year Award under the category of Energy Efficient Buildings – Leadership in Energy Management. The company was recognized for efficient energy practices throughout their entire real estate portfolio.

“USAA Real Estate Company is pleased to be a part of the ENERGY STAR program,” said Edward B. Kelley, President and CEO of USAA Real Estate Company. “We are proud to make the environment and energy management apriority at our organization. This award exemplifies our operational effort to partner with U.S. Government agencies to achieve energy efficiency, as well as reducing energy expenses for our tenants.”

“USAA Real Estate Company has made ENERGY STAR and energy performance part of their overall business strategy as well as part of their day-to-day operations,” said Kathleen Hogan, director of EPA’s Climate Protection Partnerships Division. “By joining the ENERGY STAR program, organizations such as USAA have demonstrated a long term commitment to the environment and to the bottom line.”

The ENERGY STAR Award is given to a variety of organizations to recognize their efforts to use energy efficiently in their own facilities and integrate energy efficiency into their organization’s strategy. These award winners are selected from thousands of organizations that participate in the ENERGY STAR program.

Across the U.S., leading companies and organizations are discovering the value of pursuing an energy management strategy by participating in the ENERGY STAR program. In 2001 alone, ENERGY STAR helped Americans save enough energy to power 10 million homes and reduce the air pollution equivalent to taking 12 million cars off the road –all while saving consumers $6 billion.

USAA Real Estate Company has more than $2.9 billion in assets under management and provides acquisition, build-to-suit and development services for corporate and institutional investors. The USAA portfolio consists of office, industrial and hotel properties as well as investments in real estate operating companies. USAA, the parent company of USAA Real Estate Company, has been serving military families since 1922 and has become one of America’s leading insurance and financial services companies. The association, well known for its exceptional service, offers its 5 million members a comprehensive range of insurance, banking and investment products and services designed to help them meet their financial needs. Headquartered in San Antonio with offices throughout the United States and Europe, USAA owns or manages assets of more than $69 billion.

ENERGY STAR was introduced by the US Environmental Protection Agency in 1992 as a voluntary market-based partnership to reduce air pollution through increased energy efficiency. The program offers businesses and consumers energy-efficient solutions to save energy, money and help protect the environment for future generations. More than 7,000 organizations have become ENERGY STAR partners and are committed to improving the energy efficiency of products, homes and businesses.
